Contemporary rock lyrics as poetry

Nature, a tree, a bush, a rock, classic, pop, music!

Welcome back to the blog of poets! This is the last but not least type of poetry I will teach you. It is contemporary rock lyrics as poetry.

Now, here's a question. What is your favorite song? Well, these days, many people like pop music. That's why they are called pop music. Popular music - ular = pop music. No, really. That's how they got the name pop.

For an example, let's use my favorite song. I'm not being selfish or anything. I mean, come on. It's been almost 1 and 1/3 months and no one is joining. So, let's start. This type of poetry is actually like a survey, kind of. Here are the questions.

1) Find your favorite lyrics to a song.
2) What is the name of a song?
3) What is the name of the group? Album?
4) How would you describe this song?
5) What is the song about?
6) What is the theme?
7) Copy your favorite lines and explain what they mean to you.

So here is my answer for the first question. Can you guess what it is?

When i see you, I get blown away
Something inside me is taking over
I start st-stuttering; can’t find the words to say
I feel the opposite of sober

It’s what you do to me
Got me saying yeah, yeah, yeah
It’s like I’m in a dream
And when I wake up I know that you’re still here with me

All I ever wanted was a one life stand
I could spend forever in a moment like this
All I ever wanted was a one life stand
So take me away

When i see you, I get blown away
Something inside me is taking over
I start st-stuttering; can’t find the words to say
I feel the opposite of sober

It’s what you do to me
Got me saying yeah, yeah, yeah
It’s like I’m in a dream
And when I wake up I know that you’re still here with me

All I ever wanted was a one life stand
I could spend forever in a moment like this
All I ever wanted was a one life stand
So take me away

All I ever wanted was a one life stand
I could spend forever in a moment like this
All I ever wanted was a one life stand
So take me away
So take me away
So take me away (take me away)

Ooh
we got one life, we got one heart
Ooh

I’m so in this, I can touch the sky
It’s like we’re on a roller coaster
My body’s aching
And you’re the reason why
Why don’t you come a little closer

It’s what you do to me
Got me saying yeah, yeah, yeah
It’s like I’m in a dream
And when I wake up I know that you’re still here with me

So take me away

All I ever wanted was a one life stand
I could spend forever in a moment like this
All I ever wanted was a one life stand
So take me away

All I ever wanted was a one life stand
I could spend forever in a moment like this
All I ever wanted was a one life stand
So take me away

Now do you know my answer for question #2?

2) The song title is one life stand.

I guess it was kind of obvious.

Since this is a bit boring, I'll just tell you the rest of my answers.

3) The singers are Ian Longo & Jay Wainwright, the feat was from Craig Smart, and

4) The song sounds a bit sad, but it is actually a catchy song.

5) The song is about a man telling how he feels when he is close to a women he likes.

6) It's sung when the man is telling the women he likes her for the first time.

7)
It’s like I’m in a dream
And when I wake up I know that you’re still here with me

I chose this because it's kind of awesome, having a dream actually come true and all.

See? I told you it's kind of like a survey.

So, I guess that's all 12 different types of poems. I hope you enjoyed the blog of poets. However, this is not the end. You can all still tell each other more different types of poetry I didn't tell you and all. You can even feel free to talk to each other by posts. Well, anyways, goodbye.

Pantoums

Hi. Remember quatrains?

No, we are not doing quatrains again just in case you forget it. I am going to tell you something like that, though. It is pantoums. No, not phantoms, pantoums. Pantoums are poetry that are made by 8 different lines which are lengthened into 16 lines.

For Pantoums, here's the structure. We start with a line with a rhyme scheme of a. Then write a second line with the rhyme scheme of b. Then make the third and fourth line with the rhyme schemes a and b. So the rhyme scheme of the first four lines are abab. Then, we skip a line and start the next four sets of rhymes. The rhyme scheme is bcbc, but c can't be equal to a or b. Of course, a can't be equal to b, either. However, the 5th and 7th lines are the same lines as lines 2 and 4. The same thing happens to the next set of four lines with the rhyme scheme cdcd. Again, d is not equal to a, b, or c. The 9th and 11th line is equal to the 6th and 8th line. At the last set of four lines, the lines 13, 14, 15, and 16 is equal to lines 10, 3, 12, and 1.

Here's something that might make it easier to understand.

line 1, rhyme scheme a
line 2, rhyme scheme b
line 3, rhyme scheme a
line 4, rhyme scheme b

line 2, rhyme scheme b
line 5, rhyme scheme c
line 4, rhyme scheme b
line 6, rhyme scheme c

line 5, rhyme scheme c
line 7, rhyme scheme d
line 6, rhyme scheme c
line 8, rhyme scheme d

line 7, rhyme scheme d
line 3, rhyme scheme a
line 8, rhyme scheme d
line 1, rhyme scheme a

Still confused? I think this would be easier.

1.a
2.b
3.a
4.b

5(2).b
6.c
7(4).b
8.c

9(6).c
10.d
11(8).c
12.d

13(10).d
14(3).a
15(12).d
16(1).a

Now, this would make it the easiest: an example.

Every day is the normal day,
Nothing new never appears,
But the days are never in an ordinary way,
And abnormal ways never disappears.

Nothing new never appears,
Because every day is already new.
And abnormal ways never disappears.
I wish it's a lie, but it's very true.

Because every day is already new.
You never know what will come.
I wish it's a lie, but it's very true.
So I suggest you to just sit around and drink some rum.

You never know what will come.
But the days are never in an ordinary way,
So I suggest you to just sit around and drink some rum.
Every day is the normal day.

Get it yet? Well, this was pretty long and all, so later.

Number poem

8-9! 23-5-12-3-15-13-5 2-1-3-11 20-15 20-8-5 2-12-15-7 15-6 16-15-5-20-19!

Have I suddenly gone bonkers? No. Is this a poem? No, but it would be awesome if it was. It's the old A=1 trick.

This time, we are learning about number poems. Usually I don't write the word 'poem' in my titles, but without 'poem', this is just plain 'number', so I wrote 'number poem'.

A number poem is fun to write. Think about a number that is really important to you. Your CARE card, your address, your phone number, your birthday, anything.

As an example, let's use the birthday of Michael Jackson. Remember I used him as an example for the introduction poem? Lets do that again.

08/29/1958
08291958

The number of numbers there are are the number of lines there is going to be. The number of syllables are going to be chosen by the number. The first line has the first number's amount of syllables. If there is a (0), that becomes a (10).

Michael Jackson was tremendously cool (10)
He got the nickname king of pop (8)
Maybe (2)
He got the name by drinking pop (9)
And (1)
It was probably many of them (9)
That is how he got (5)
The nickname king of pop (8)

Of course, everyone knows that is not the reason.

Oh, well, that's it for this one. Enjoy the blog of poets. Try and be a follower.

Limericks

Hi. Do you like lime?

Welcome back to the blog of poets! This time, I am telling you what limericks are, and there is no lime contained in it. Limericks are just lines that form rhyming pattern aabba, and has 8, 8 again, 5, 5 again, and 8 syllables in each line. The number of syllables could be slightly different, but it can only be +-1.
As an example, anyone heard the movie "cats and dogs 2" is coming out? That's why I wrote about a cat and a dog.

Why you can't see hogs in the city

There once was a cat and a dog,
And there was a big giant hog.
The hog have said that
The two guys were fat,
Those were the last words of the hog.

O.K., maybe the words are kind of lame, but at least it's connected to the subject.

Extended metaphors

Something
Is like
Something
Kinda like this

Welcome back to the blog of poets. Do you know what I teach today? There's a hint up there. Something is like something. What is this called? No, I don't mean similes, I mean metaphors. What are metaphors? Metaphors are a figure of speech comparing two things that are similar. They use the words like or as. An extended metaphor poem is a poem where a lot of metaphors are stuck together. There's one thing: All metaphors need to be comparing only one thing to only one thing. Here's an example.

Poetry
is like
a building,
made with
bricks of words
connected with spaces and lines
acting like cement,
giving the world a
wonderful view.
There's not just one.
There is many roaming
the world. There are
many types of poems such as
quatrains and diamantes.
There are many
types of buildings such as
apartments and
superstores. A poem would have
a reason why
it was written.
A building would have
a reason why
it was built. Poems
need to worry
about its structure
and word
choices. Buildings need to worry
about earthquakes
and overreacting
people.

You see, this poem is comparing one thing: poetry, to one thing: buildings. This is a crucial point of this type of poetry.

Well, since that's a long poem, I guess I should end. C ya at limericks!

Shape poem

Welcome back to the blog of poets. Now, this is a poem I can't write on here because it is impossible. A shape poem is a poem where the poem looks like the subject of the poem. If it's about a fish, it looks like a fish. Speaking of fish, check this thing I found in google images!

Yes, this is a poem that wasn't finished. But still, you get the picture. I hope. C U next time!

Quatrains

Here's a question. What is the most famous type of poetry in the world? It's probably this I'm about to talk about now.

Welcome again to the blog of poets! The summer vacation is near, I see?

Why I say this is the most famous type of poetry is because many people use this. It is time we go for the rhymes.

Does 'Quatrain' sound familiar? The word 'quat' is a root word meaning four. This is because the quatrain poem is made by four lines. There are two types of poems in quatrains. One is the aabb. The next is the abab. The abab is the famous one. It is the type where the first and third, the second and fourth line rhyme with each other. The aabb type is the typoe where the first and second, the third and fourth rhyme with each other. Here's an example of an aabb.

Do not, under any circumstances, (a)
Ever try to break the world's balances (a)
They will always come back-only, more worse (b)
Really, I don't want to go through that course (b)

See? Circumstances rhyme with balances, and worse rhymes with course. Now do you get it? If you do, then that's it for you. C ya!

Diamantes

Dots make up lines. Lines make up a surface. Surfaces make up the 3rd dimension.

Letters make up words. Words make up a sentence. Sentences make up the poetry dimension.

Welcome back to the blog of poets! As you can see upon, I wrote that words make up sentences which make up the poetry dimension. Well, in this case, we go from words straight to the poetry dimension. We are going to learn about diamantes!

Diamante poems are poems where we use words to make up a poem. It is called diamante because of it's diamond shape. Here's an example.

Diamante poems

Diamante
Dull, gloomy
Boring, agonizing, terrifying
Painful, terrible, awesome, painless
Amazing, stunning, enjoying
Fun, amused
Recess

If you actually think this, you will not be a good poet.
Look at the poem again. It starts with a subject. At the next line, there are two adjectives. Then, there are three -ing words. Then, there are two words about the subject followed by two words that are not about the subject. That is followed by three -ing words that are not about the subject. Then there are two adjectives which are not about the subject, and finally, the opposite of the subject. Diamantes are centered out so that is what makes up the diamond shape.

I guess that's its, so bye!

Haikus and Tankas

Konichihua! Welcome to Japan!

No, we are not actually at Japan. But we are learning two poems that came from Japan.

Haikus and Tankas are two poems about nature that comes from Japan. It is also an ancient way for a man to show his feelings to a women he likes. The man sends a haiku and if the women likes the haiku, she sends a reply tanka. Pretty weird procedure, huh? So let's learn about the ancient way of Japanese poetry.

Let's start with Haikus. It has three lines of 5, 7, and 5 again of syllables. This is probably the second most famous type of poetry. O.K., here's an example.

Running upon us
A speedy runner of Earth
Blowing things away

Did you notice anything weird about the haiku? You might have noticed that this is about wind, but I don't mean that. What I am talking about is that the haiku has no title. This is one of the beauties of the haiku. You need to read and find out what the poem is about. It is a tanka's wonder, too. A tanka is a reply to a haiku, like I said before. That's why this is similar to a haiku, but there are two more lines of 7 syllables. Here is a tanka. Can you see what it is about??

Factories make smoke
I think that cars make more smoke
It doesn't matter
The sky turns grey anyway
People don't care anyway

As you can see, this is about pollution. Can you see what these two is about?

Poetry writing
We are writing Haikus
Even this is one

Poetry again
This time we all write Tankas
Close to Haikus
But not Haikus at all
Come on, it's just poetry!

Well, that's it for the trip to Japan. Sayonara!

Cinquains

Cinquain poems... Now we have to do some lines.

Welcome back to the blog of poets! How did you like the circle poem lesson?

A cinquain poem is a short, unrhymed (sadly) poem with 22 syllables in 5 lines. The first line has 2 syllables. The next has 4. The next has 6. The next has 8. The last has 2. You do the math.

Here is a cinquain I would like to call school.

It's dull.

It's creepy, too.

It is a jail with kids.

Fs for grades are their best weapon.

It's school.

Yes, people who hate school would actually think like this, now won't they?

So as you can see, I used 5 lines that doesn't rhyme, but there are the exact number of syllables per line. Now that we are doing some lines, here are an easy way to make a poem. First, make an subject. Next, you come up with a lot of words that describe your subject. Finally, line up the subjects to make a poem. It's pretty simple.

Well, I guess that's enough for this poem. Next time, we are going to Japan!

From James K to all other poets

Circle poems

This time, we'll look at circle poems. But before we start, I just want to ask you: Do you want to be a poet of the blog of poets? Join now, cuz I'm lonely. It's been one month, and no one's joining!

Circle poems don't look like circles. It's just the way it travels. It goes from one subject to another subject. Then that goes to another subject, but the third subject can be nothing like the first subject. For example, lets say we start with computers. Computers can go to windows, since that's what you call the things you look at the screen. Then let's go from windows to houses, since houses have windows. Let's go from houses to ground, since houses stand on the ground. Computers and windows are linked, windows and houses are linked, and houses and ground is linked. But is computers and ground linked? No. This is what a circle poem is. It goes from link to link but the middle and the beginning has nothing to do with each other. But the links have to lead back to what you started with. If you started with computers, you have to end with computers. Here's a circle poem about, um, computers.

Computers

Windows

House

Ground

Dirt

Plants

Biology

University

Teachers

Knowledge

Technology

Can you see how I went from computers to technology? What? It's too short? OK, you want long? I'll give you long.

Biology

University

Students

Is that long enough for you? I hope so.

So, I guess that's it for this poem too. Next it's tome to learn about cinquain poems. C ya then!

Introduction poems

Now people know what is poetry. Now, it is time to learn all different types of poetry.

The first poem I will introduce you is... it's funny, using that word introduce to introduce people to introduction poems. Yes, I'm introducing you poets to introduction poems.

Introduction poems are, of course, poems that introduce people. It can be as long as people want, but it's better to be longer. That way, it's more, um, detailed. This type of poem starts with "I am (introducing person's name here)" Lets make an example. Who should be a volunteer... Michael Jackson. If you are introducing Michael Jackson to the world, the poem should start and end with "I am Michael Jackson". Speaking of Michael Jackson, did you know Michael Jackson was a poet, too? He was even a American singer-songwriter, dancer, actor, choreographer, businessman, philanthropist and record producer. You can write that at the poem. "I was a American singer-songwriter, dancer, actor, choreographer, poet, businessman, philanthropist and record producer." You can say more true interesting facts about him, such as "I was known as the King of Pop" or "I was proclaimed the most awarded entertainer of all time, the biggest-selling artist of all time, the most popular artist in the history of show business, and the world’s most famous man", but the facts at an introduction poem can bee lies, too. You can say "I man-wrestled a man eating crocodile". I don't know if Michael Jackson actually did that, but you can write it anyway. OK, so here's an introduction poem I wrote about me. I used facts and false facts at the same time.

I am James Kim.

I was once totally freaked out by fish that were harmless.

I have a best friend that I so want to kill.

I hate North Korea.

Once it took me 1 minute for me to write one sentence on the computer.

I have the world's worst balance.

I am a christian.

I got called by the police for making prank calls.

Once in a zoo, a crocodile came out of it's cage and tried to eat me.

I have an older brother who is in middle school.

I was once interested in being an inventor.

I am James Kim.

You might find it hard to write false and true facts at the same time. If you do, here's a way. You write out all the true sentences on the top. Then, write the false sentences on the bottom. Then mix the sentences up. It's simple.

Well, that's it for introductions. Next, it's time for circle poems.

Until then, C ya!

What is poetry?

If you didn't see what I told you to see before you see this, please go back and see Look at this before you see What is poetry.

I think that's what I wrote as the title.

O.K., so at the post before, I asked what is poetry. You might think you're smart and write an answer. Well, what you wrote as an answer is wrong. I don't care if you wrote something smart like rhymes and lines and stuff, but they're wrong.

Poetry is actually anything a person might write about. Someone writes a poem about his feelings. That is poetry. Someone writes a poem to tell an idiotic person a lesson. Again, poetry. Someone just writes anything he chooses in his own mind. They are all poetry.

O.K. Here's an example.

Dawn blushed; betrayed her waking sky
To gently break another morrow fine.
Night waned – the black receding – highland
Reaching for the early morning wine.

The chorus rendered frantic caws and
Chirps and other avian song,
Mapping out the 'mine and yours, ' and
Goading more to sing along!

Quiescent water – deep of lake –
Reflected out the hazy red, but
Through the glass, a flick, a break:
An urgent tail from hidden bed!

And in the meadow, waking faces
Calmly spread a colored veil;
The dew disclosing spider laces–
Oft with once a fly’s travail!

Dawn blushed; revealed her inner peace.
She handed on another blissful day.
Night ebbed, relenting to release of
Warming blood that gives to her display.

This is a poem called Dawn, written by Mark R Slaughter. When he was writing this, he could have just wrote a poem looking out of his window at dawn and write what he have seen.

You see, poems can be random things. They can be anything in the world. Even your own crummy house can be a perfect poem. Well, I guess it won't be the best. Still, I'm not talking about qualities of poems. What I am talking about is that everything you can do can be a poem.

So, now, what is poetry?

If you said an answer, please read this entire thing all over again.

Just kidding! You have no need to read all this all over again.

Well, that's it for this post. Starting from the next post, I am going to talk about different types of poems. I am talking about Haikus and Cinquains and Diamantes.

You are now going to enter the wonderful world of poetry.

Enjoy the Blog of poets!

From James K to all beginners of poetry

Look at this before you see what is poetry.

I hope you followed the instructions of the title and see this before you read what is poetry. If you didn't, that's O.K. Better late than never.

I'm not writing anything here. I'm just asking a question.

If you think you're so smart, answer me this question.

What is poetry?
